7 aspects to pay attention to when choosing running shoes


Regardless of whether you run to kill time and relax, treat it as a form of weight loss, or are preparing for a marathon, the right shoes are essential. They ensure proper body posture, preventing injuries and making exercise more enjoyable. We tell you what to pay attention to when choosing running shoes.

#1 Choose the right size

Choosing the right shoe size seems obvious. However, many runners forget about this aspect and choose too large sports shoes, fearing that their feet will swell due to activity.

To ensure maximum comfort in your running shoes, don't compromise on size. Most sports shoe manufacturers include half sizes.

It is best if you try on running shoes in the evening, when your feet are tired after a hard day. Make sure your fingers can move freely.

Remember that well-selected sports shoes do not have to "break in". Choose the size that will fit perfectly from the start.

#2 Consider the surface you plan to run on

Do you only run on a treadmill? Or maybe you enjoy this activity most in the forest? Choose shoes with an appropriate sole dedicated to specific surfaces. 

Light and flexible shoes will work better on even, but hard surfaces - sidewalks, paths and treadmills. They perfectly absorb shocks and significantly minimize the risk of possible injury.

For running on terrain full of obstacles, choose shoes with deep tread and lugs on the sole, which will provide you with excellent grip on uneven surfaces. Their additional advantage is perfect ankle support, which is extremely important when running on uneven surfaces. 

Remember that wearing such shoes for activities on a treadmill or sidewalk may be uncomfortable. If you plan to run on both roads and forests, choose hybrid running shoes that will work in both conditions.

#3 Pay attention to cushioning

The thickness of the material under the midsole and the hardness of the foam used, i.e. cushioning, also depend on the place where you plan to run. Both of these aspects are responsible for absorbing impacts.

Consider how far you plan to travel. If you're training for a marathon, choose shoes with more cushioning. For shorter distances, shoes with a more flexible sole will work best. 

Also pay special attention to the so-called shoe sole drop. Exceeding 10 mm will provide your feet with great cushioning. The disadvantage of this solution is greater heel effort. 

In turn, the lower the drop, the more impacts the metatarsus takes. This may cause the Achilles tendon to work harder. 

If you are just starting your adventure with this sport, choose traditional shoes with a drop of about 8 mm.

#4 Take a look at your old shoes

When choosing new running shoes, it is worth taking a look at an old, frequently worn pair. This will give you a great idea of ​​how your foot works.

If the sole of the shoe shows signs of wear on the inside, then you will need a pair of stabilizing sports shoes with a light structure. Otherwise you may get injured. 

When you notice signs of wear on the outside of the shoe, choose flexible running shoes with a high degree of cushioning. This will prevent injuries.

#5 Pay attention to the construction of the shoe

Each part of the shoe has its own purpose. Even the smallest mismatches can make you feel uncomfortable while running. Remember that the lighter the construction of the shoe, the less fatigue you will feel after the run.

The upper of a sports shoe is usually made of fabric or modern mesh. Choose a stretchy material that will give your feet the support they need.

It is equally important that the heel does not slip in the shoe and that the back of the shoe does not irritate the ankles or tendons in any way.

Also pay special attention to the shoelaces. Make sure they are not made of slippery material and will not come undone during activity. This will help you prevent any tripping.

#6 Don't forget about the sole

When choosing running shoes, do not forget to carefully analyze the sole. The protrusions it contains will increase your grip on the ground, providing you with stability. 

The flexible material will improve flexibility and ensure that running will be a real pleasure. Too stiff soles may make it difficult to bend the foot and cause excessive load, significantly affecting the comfort of use.

#7 Choose comfort

Some solutions will work for some people, while for others they will be doomed to failure. Remember to choose shoes according to your preferences. Try on different models and see which ones you feel best in. 

Don't just go by appearance. Sports shoes should, above all, be functional and provide you with comfort while running. How they look is a secondary aspect.
